Dr Elizabeth Fox

Dr Elizabeth Fox is an anthropologist and researcher of Mongolia. Focussed mainly on Ulaanbaatar, her research has covered circus contortionists, cashmere factory workers, street-level bureaucrats, and ger district residents. Her doctoral thesis 'Between Iron and Coal: Enacting Kinship, Bureaucracy and Infrastructure in the Ger Districts of Ulaanbaatar' (UCL, 2019) was based on long term fieldwork in the outskirts of Mongolia's capital and constitutes one of the first book-length anthropological studies of life in these areas.

Dr Joseph Bristley

Joseph Bristley is Research Associate at MIASU, working on the ESRC-funded project 'Resource frontiers: managing water on a trans-border Asian river'. He is responsible for carrying out project research in Mongolia, where he has worked since 2013. Aside from Joseph’s current research on the relation between international law and water resource management, he is also interested in Mongolian pastoral economies. Based on previous Ph.D. research (UCL, 2017) he has published on social aspects of money, number and ideologies of abundance, new debt relations, and (jointly) mountain sacrifices.

Dr Thomas White

Dr Thomas White is Lecturer in China and Sustainable Development at the Lau China Institute, King’s College London.

He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2016 with a thesis based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Inner Mongolia since 2011. His monograph, China’s Camel Country: Livestock and Nation-Building at a Pastoral Frontier, will be published in 2024 with the University of Washington Press.
