Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Alasha, an arid region in the far west of China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Thomas White illustrates how state environmentalism has—through grazing bans, enclosure, and resettlement—transformed the lives of ethnic Mongol pastoralists and their animals.
