Mongolia and Inner Asia Studies Unit

 

Dr Thomas White is Lecturer in China and Sustainable Development at the Lau China Institute, King’s College London.

He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2016 with a thesis based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Inner Mongolia since 2011. His monograph, China’s Camel Country: Livestock and Nation-Building at a Pastoral Frontier, will be published in 2024 with the University of Washington Press. 

From 2022 to 2023 he was a Research Associate at MIASU, on the ESRC-funded project Trading Mongolia’s Sovereign Meat. As part of this project, his research examines the development of Mongolia’s economic and geopolitical relationship with China as it manifests in the meat and livestock trade, looking in particular at problems of ecology, infrastructure, and animal disease.
