The Mongolia & Inner Asia Studies Unit is an interdisciplinary research unit at the University of Cambridge, founded in 1986 by Professor Caroline Humphrey and Professor Urgunge Onon. It has since become a centre of international importance for studies of the region.
Inner Asia is becoming increasingly significant in global dynamics, and is of increasing interest to governments and commercial enterprises. It has tended to be a neglected region in terms of in-depth study and MIASU is redressing this balance, but could be even more successful with an expansion of its programmes.
The Unit is keen to expand its own research activities and enhance appreciation of the societies and cultures in this region. In 2011, marking 25 years of successful research and growth of the Unit the Friends of MIASU association was launched to further this work.
