Hiking to the Past: memory landscape of contemporary Mongolia
Alevtina Solovyeva, University of Tartu
The report shares a starting project in folklore, memory studies and visual anthropology in contemporary urban and rural space in Mongolia. During the presentation, some discoveries from the first fieldwork will be shared. The presentation will encourage discussions about contemporary approaches and theories regarding oral history and folklore, demonstrate on empirical experience how concepts of ‘place-lore’ and ‘microhistory’ can be applied and to what results they might lead. The presentation will also aim to observe and talk about the topical memory map of contemporary Mongolia in historical and contemporary contexts.
