Mongolia and Inner Asia Studies Unit

 

On Wednesday 18 September the MIASU was delighted to welcome Mongolia's Cultural Envoy, Unurmaa Janchiv, and State Epic Storyteller, Baatarjav Erdenetsogt.

Baatarjav Erdenetsogt is a Mongolian heritage carrier of the legendary tradition of epic storytelling (tuuli) and overtone singer. He plays an ancient wooden flute (tsuur) and lute (tovshuur), which originated from the Altai Mountain region in Mongolia .

Epic singing, the ancient wooden flute and khöömei (overtone) singing have all been inscribed as on the list of the Mongolia’s Intangible Cultural Heritage with UNESCO.
