INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE:

MONGOLIAN STUDIES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 21ST CENTURY: CURRENT STATE AND DEVELOPMENT PROSPECTS – II

Jointly organised by the Kalmyk Research Centre and the Buryat Institute for Mongolia, Buddhist and Tibetan Studies.

Caroline Humphrey, Sayana Namsaraeva, Michael Long and Hedwig Waters presented at this online conference on Mongolian Studies held between 6-9 October.

Professor Caroline Humphrey’s plenary paper ‘Mongolian Maps as Relational Documents’ explored indigenous Mongolian cartographical practices and the ways they were used to convey messages concerning identity and geographical understanding to the Qing authorities. The talk was illustrated with 19th and early 20th century maps.

The conference covered a wealth of topics, including a special panel  on the status of Mongolian, Buryat and Kalmyk languages in the Russian Federation.

The online format enabled more than 100 participants from around the globe to take part in the Conference with a  strong presence of Russian, Mongolian, and Inner Mongolian researchers.
