Introduction of Research Materials About the Khoshut Mongols
Darig Thokmay (Visiting Scholar, MIASU, University of Cambridge)
Despite the significant role played by the Khoshut Mongols in the history of Inner Asia, particularly in the context of interstate relations and border dynamics among Tibetans, Mongols, and Chinese from the 17th century onwards, scholarly research on the Khoshut Mongols remains limited, fragmented, and at times contradictory. A wealth of research materials related to the Khoshut Mongols has been largely overlooked, with many scholars remaining unaware of their existence. This paper examines a selection of historical sources, particularly those in the Tibetan language, some of which have been employed by researchers studying topics related to Tibetans and Manchus rather than focusing specifically on the Khoshut Mongols. By analysing these materials, this study introduces a fresh perspective that not only enhances understanding of the Khoshut Mongols but also offers insights into other Mongol groups, Tibetans, and Manchus.
