Deifying Chinggis Khan:The status of Chinggis khan among the Mongols and building his sacred statue
Byambaragchaa Ganbold (Chinggis Khaan National Museum & MIASU visiting scholar)
This presentation by Byambaragchaa Ganbold explores the ways in which the newly established Chinggis Khan National Museum in Mongolia is reshaping public perceptions of cultural heritage, with particular attention to its impact on the symbolic and ideological valuation of Chinggis Khan.
Drawing on empirical observations, the analysis focuses on how material representations—such as the monumental statue of Chinggis Khan, the reconstructed state seal from his governance, and the revered White banner—are increasingly functioning as objects of national veneration. These icons are not merely historical artifacts; they are also becoming focal points of a form of collective devotion, indicating the emergence of a symbolic and quasi-sacred space around the figure of Chinggis Khan in contemporary Mongolian consciousness.
The presentation further posits that the Chinggis Khan National Museum, and particularly the newly erected statue, may serve as a symbolic magnet or cultural anchor for the global Mongolic diaspora, raising questions about transnational identity and the role of monumental heritage in fostering ethno-historical connectivity.
