Mongolia and Inner Asia Studies Unit

 

The Chinggis Khaan Grant (2025-2030) is a prestigious visiting research grant under the Programme for Visiting Research Fellowships and Travel Grants at the University of Cambridge to promote the study of Chinggis Khaan and the Mongol Empire established with the support of the Government of Mongolia and the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Recognising the national and international importance of the study of Chinggis Khaan and the Mongol Empire, this grant aims to foster a new generation of scholars dedicated to advancing research on Chinggis Khaan and Mongolian history.

The Chinggis Khaan Grant Programme is fully funded by the Government of Mongolia and administered by the Mongolia and Inner Asia Studies Unit (MIASU) at the University of Cambridge in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, Sport, Tourism and Youth of Mongolia, and the Institute of Chinggis Khaan Heritage and Culture.

Each year, the grant supports:

  • One scholar from Mongolia for a fully funded research visit to MIASU, Cambridge, for up to nine months (University of Cambridge academic year*)
  • One scholar from Mongolia for a fully funded research visit to MIASU, Cambridge, for up to three months (University of Cambridge academic term*)
  • One MIASU-affiliated scholar for a fully funded research visit in Mongolia of up to three months.

WHAT THE CHINGGIS KHAAN GRANT OFFERS

The Chinggis Khaan Grant is a fully funded research opportunity covering all essential expenses for up to 3 and up to 9 months depending on the award.

Coverage:

  • Accommodation – In Cambridge, MIASU can assist in finding accommodation; in Mongolia, the Institute of Chinggis Khaan Heritage and Culture can assist in finding accommodation.
  • Travel – Round-trip economy-class airfare.
  • Living Expenses – A monthly grant of £2,500 (For scholars from Mongolia in Cambridge who use this grant to cover their costs related to accommodation and food); a monthly grant of £1,000 (For the Cambridge scholar in Mongolia).
  • Visa Support – All associated visa application fees will be covered.
  • Research Access
    • Full access to Cambridge University’s resources, MIASU’s library and a Cambridge University ID card. 
    • Full access to national and university libraries in Mongolia. 
    • Attendance at seminars organized by MIASU and research institutions in Mongolia.
